CGB. Samuel MALTBY, (Junior), b. Oct. 21, 1718 (Branford Rec. Vol. II.) (Samuel 2, Wm. 1). It has always been supposed that his first wife was Abigail Wilford. However, I think it probable that he m. (1) (Boston Rec.), the following: "Intentions of marriage of Samuel MALTBY and Anne DYER, May ?, 1739. They were married June 7, 1739."

Children of Samuel MALTBY, Jr., and Anne DYER:
CGB-a. Anne Maltby, b. Jan. 24, 1739/40.
CGB-B. Thomas Dyer " b. Dec. 24, 1740. (evidently d. young)
CGB-C. Thomas Dyer " b. Dec. 17, 1742.

Samuel MALTBY, (Jr.), m. Oct. 13, 1743 Abigail WILFORD, (for which see Branford Rec. and Bailey Early Conn. Marriages). Ceremony performed by Rev. Philemon Robbins. (Was she first or second wife?)

Children of Samuel Maltby, Jr. and Abigail WILFORD,
CGB-d. Abigail MALTBY, b. April 22, 1744 (Branford Rec. Vol. "1694").
Samuel MALTBY, Junior, m. Jan. 22, 1745/6 at Branford Rebecca FOOTE. Rev. Philemon Robbins performed the ceremony. (Bailey Early Conn. Marriages, Branford Rec.).

Children of Samuel MALTBY, Jr. and Rebecca FOOTE:
CGB-E. Samuel Maltby " b. Nov. 15, 1746, at Northford.
CGB-F. James " b. May 30, 1749.
CGB-G. Jonathan " b. Oct. 21, 1751.
CGB-h. Rebecca " b. May 25, 1754; d. May 16 (or 15) 1755 (Branford
                               Rec. of deaths.)

Samuel Maltby, Jr., m. May 1, 1755, Mary Fowler, of Guilford. Notes on the ancestry of Abigail Wilford:

She was b. Sept. 17, 1720 at Branford, dau. of Richard and Elizabeth (Pollard) Wilford. Elizabeth Pollard was the dau. of Thomas Pollard of Maidstone, Co., Kent, Eng. Richard Wilford, son of Richard and Anne (Griffith) Wilford of Walton, Surrey, England.

The record of the death of Richard Wilford reads: "Oct. 24, 1734. Mr. Richard Wilford, late of London. Free citizen, a "salter," died in the 81st year of his age." (Branford Rec. "1694") Mrs. Cushman wrote: "The old Wilford house still stands and was pointed out by my Aunt Foote." (N.B. I think this was at Northford.)

The tombstone of Abigail Wilford Maltbie is in the old burying yard at Northford.

   "Mrs. Abigail
      ye wife of
M. Samuel Maltbie, Jun.
  died June 2nd, 1744
   in her 23rd year."
Mrs. Cushman wrote: "The grave is near that of her father-in-law and I am lead to believe that Capt. Samuel and his son's family had moved to Northford before this time. The old house in which Aunt Ruth now lives, was built by Capt. Samuel or his son Samuel."

Notes on the ancestry of Rebecca Foote, 2nd or 3rd wife of Samuel Maltby, Jr.
(Branford Rec. and Foote Genealogy by Goodwin, 1848). Rebecca Foote was b. Oct. 20, 1723; d. Feb. 9, 1755; dau. of Stephen and Elizabeth (Nash) Foote, of Branford. Stephen Foote was b. Dec. 14, 1672, m. (1) in 1702, Elizabeth Nash who d. Jan. 15, 1739. He m. (2) Hannah Howd, who d. Sept. 1754. He d. Oct. 23, 1762 at Branford, Conn. Stephen Foote was a son of Lieut. Robert Foote was a son of Nathaniel Foote who was b. in 1593, d. in 1644.

Note. Another authority states the 2nd wife of Stephen Foote was "Hannah Howe." Lieut. Robert Foote was of Branford, Wethersfield and Wallingford. The wife of Nathaniel Foote was Elizabeth Deming, sister of Mr. John Deming, one of the first settlers of Wethersfield. He m. her about 1615. After his death in 1644, she m. (2) Mr. Thomas Wells, Magistrate, and later Governor of the Colony. She d. July 28, 1683, aged about 85. (Ref. Foote Gen. by Goodwin).

Elizabeth Nash probably descended from Thomas Nash, who in 1651 had charge of all the town muskets in New Haven.

Under "Howd" I have the following: "Anthony Howd died in 1671 and his widow, Elizabeth, m. (2) in 1677, John Nash. Possibly Elizabeth Nash, who m. in 1702, Stephen Foote, was dau. of the above, and grand-dau. of John, of New Haven.

(Branford Rec. Vol. II). "In April, 1746, Samuel Maltbie, Jun. was made a Freeman of Branford."
(Vol. "1694." p. 147). "May 16, 1755. The infant daughter, Rebekah, died aged one year and two months."

Rebecca (Foote) Maltby died Feb. 9, 1755. By her Samuel had four children. He m. (3) (Branford Rec. "1694," p. 165) "May 1, 1755. Samuel Maltbie and Mary Fowler of Guilford, were married in Guilford, by Ichabod Camp, Clerk." (Branford Deeds. Vol. IX, p. 102)

"1 Sept. 1768. Samuel Maltbie of Branford. To my daughter Abigail Tyler, wife of Bille Tyler, all my right, title and interest in a tract of land in Branford, it being the whole of what descended to my late wife Abigail, from her father, Richard Wilford, deceased."

Mrs. Cushman wrote: "In 1763 our ancestor this side of the water first made any movement toward breaking away from the Puritan form of worship, and establishing the Church of England. Samuel Maltbie in 1763, moved with others to build an Episcopal Church."

This evidently was at Northford, and it is clear that many of the Maltby family who were living in Northford, constantly appear on records as "of Branford."

Note. A recent letter, Feb. 19, 1954, from Ruth G. Beers, Town Clerk of North Branford, clarifies Northford Maltbys as being recorded as "of Branford." Miss Beers writes: "Prior to 1831 North Branford which includes the village of Northford was a part of the town Branford, and the records are in the town of Branford up to that date."
(Records of the Episcopal Society. (St. Andrews) of Northford,
"Deed of land from James Howd. A.D. 1763.--King George III. Jas.
Howd of Branford, Co. of New Haven, Colony of Conn., for consideration of five hundred pounds, lawful money, reced. of Ichabod

Barker, Town Clerk. febu 80, felie 280)"

"Branford, April 20, 1763. We the Subscribers, professors of the Church of England, being desirous to build a church, etc.,---to build on Paul Tyler's lot on the East side of the road above the meeting house in the Parish of Northford in Branford.
